Ready, set, kinder transition program
Starting school is a big and exciting moment for your child and your family. Making sure this transition is positive helps your child feel happy and confident, which is important for their wellbeing and success at school and with friends. Starting school is also a great chance for us to connect with you and work together to support your child’s learning from the very beginning.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
At Tumut Public School, we believe in supporting a strong and successful transition to school. We have implemented an inclusive program designed to support families enrolling at Tumut PS in 2027.
We run a ‘Ready, Set, Kinder’ transition program, where children can:
- explore learning spaces, such as the library, technology classroom, playground, Kindergarten shared space and Kindergarten classrooms
- meet a range of key staff, including the Principal, office staff, Teacher Librarian, Technology teacher, current Kindergarten leaders and teachers
- meet Year 5 students who will become your child's buddy when they come to school, providing them with a familiar face
- have fun, make new friends and build confidence in our school environment
As they do, we will get to know your child and be able to build on their strengths and abilities, ensuring the best start to Kindergarten in 2027.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
